Scratching my head on the best technique to install the secondary shaft on my 750. When removing the shaft I took off the nut and used a drift to push the shaft out the RH side. The LH bearing stayed in the case and the RH bearing is still on the shaft (next to the gear).

If I install the shaft with the RH bearing still on the shaft all the stress will be on the ID of the bearing while installing. Come to think of it, this already happened while removing the shaft. Do I need to remove the gear and pull the bearing off the shaft before install and should I replace that bearing?

At any rate, some suggestions are welcome.

I didn't remove mine or the gear either and it tapped in and out very easy. I asked several other high ranking members on here before I took it out and they said they left it on too.

I have done a couple of starter clutches and never removed the right side bearing from the shaft either. The shaft is meant to be removable, so the right side bearing is a pretty loose fit in the case - not really a press fit, once installed it' s held in place by the bearing retaining plate.

If you do have trouble getting it in though, you can gently tap the bearing in with a wooden block against the outer race rather than tapping on the shaft - to do this you need to remove the secondary shaft gear if you didn't already.

When tapping in the shaft just take your time, easy does it - and make sure the starter clutch gear is in mesh with the idler gear.

Thanks for the input. Found a RH side bearing on Amazon for $14 so bought it just in case. The bearing is a 6305 with C3 clearance. I'm going to try to remove the gear just in case and then tap the bearings in place. Guess I'm just not thrilled with the prospective of driving in the bearing by putting load on the inner race.
