Tyrell the newest clutch assembly has 4 holes so they changed it at least twice........ and just clamp the hub with protection in the jaws of a vice and the 6mm allens will tap out fairly easy or use a impact like Random says ...... they are high quality steel and you won't mark em up at all ...... and not only locktite .....torgue em back to 25 - 27 ft lbs too.

EDIT ......Thought I should add they added another metal plate to the back side too (same as the front) ....... on the old original the rollers ride on the cast iron hub that it gets bolted too and now the rollers are sandwiched between the two metal plates.

Interesting, looks like I'll use the later type then. I guess more holes for better oiling...could wear here be not only a function of cold starts but also running hours?

Are starter clutches more of a problem on the 550-750's. don't recall hearing many issues on the bigger bikes...but then i guess on the 1100 it is an easy job to replace anyway.

I just took my 750 starter clutch apart today to inspect and replace the roller/springs/plungers as preventive maintenance since the engine is torn down. It's got ridges like every other starter clutch I've ever seen so I'm just going to slam it back together. The gear is discontinued anyway. Noticed the damper rubber pieces are okay, but could be tighter. Do you guys replace those as a matter of course when pulling down the assembly?

Are you sure the starter gear for the KZ750 4 cylinder bikes (12046-1032) has been discontinued? All the sites I visit show it as still being available. Ed

Strangely, the ones with ridges were working ok, the polished smooth one was stuffed. The 550/600 part is discontinued now, managed to another NOS in italy for 30 euro.

Partzilla says discontinued but just checked Bike Bandit (which typically has reliable availability info) says it's still available. Humm

These folks also show it being available, and they usually are pretty up to date. Ed

Check out Cheap Motor cycle parts too....... they helped me and a few more on here as of late..... Got my sprocket at Z Power but paid way too much with the currency exchange and shipping. Bike Bandit has it listed but told me no ......but that a while back now.

At least replace the rollers, springs and pins since its apart...... with so many having this problem you should really think about the sprocket.

Never noticed those before Tyrell........ see there is another company making copies too on EBAY...... the rollers look a little rougher at least in the picture...... not sure they are half price though....... don't see one for a 650 so maybe they are starting with the 550 first...... although I would probaly stick with NOS anyway.

Just wanted to follow-up on this topic. I went the wrong direction with the problem with my bike. It was not the starter clutch making the noise. I watched too many youtube video's and now realize that the sounds over the computer are different than real life. Anyways, I had a sticking cam chain tensioner. Actually it still keeps getting stuck and i keep resetting it...Going to look into a manual one. But a big thanks to all that helped....Tim

The seller has too much negative feed back. I don't trust him.
