GPZ750 Starter Clutch

I've got a friend with an '82 GPZ 750. Sweet bike, has the original fairing and everything. Problem is the starter clutch is gone and it doesn't have a kick start. So he's stuck bump starting it most of the time. He's kind of fed up with it, but I hate to see him sell the bike over something like this.

The starter clutch on my '79 KZ750 is real easy to get to, but I understand it's a little tougher on the GPZ.

I don't have the service manual for his bike. Anybody done this repair on a GPZ? How hard is it to get to the starter clutch?

Don't know...... hav'nt looked at a manual for this either....... but it takes the same parts according to the break downs at Partzilla. Do a search seems like some one just did one but I could be wrong.

If you take a look at a parts diagram I believe you will find all the GpZ750 starter clutch parts are the same part numbers as the KZ650 parts. Given that, I believe the procedure for replacing the starter clutch is the same as that of the KZ650. Given that, here is some good info on replacing the starter clutch. Ed

Ed, that's helpful. At the beginning of that thread it mentions another article that covers removing the starter clutch via the sump. That's the procedure I'm looking for. I'm not a member in that forum and it won't let me search. Any chance you know what post they're talking about?

I believe when that second link mentions the "full article of taking the assembly out through the sump" it is referring to the first link. Ed

Oh I see. Yeah it won't let me see that link without logging in. If it's the same as the 650 (and other 750 4s) I think I can see why he's reluctant to do it. Here's a thread from KZR on another 750-4.

Check out the thread 1981 KZ750E (engine) on the 3rd page it has a video that spells it out very nicely....... will admit it was a pain but not as bad as it looks once you get the motor out. I pulled the motor to do it and didn't remove the gear under the cir clip...... just tapped the shaft in and out with the bearing and gear left on. A search for this and under Randoms and my name will get you quite a few threads on it lately.

yes the KZ 750 and gpz 750 in the 80s is one in the same i have a 82 kz with mostly gpz engine parts onyl diff is the pistons heads and cams realy

I need to do this on my GPZ550, I'm probably going to need to split the engine for a possible crank problem but it is possible doing it through the sump. On the 550 It is quite a difficult job even on the bench, let alone working upside down.

My local dealer said they used to do them quite regularly in frame back in the day. I've even heard of bikes being lifted in the air or put on their sides when doing keyhole surgery on the primary shaft through the sump.

You need an impact wrench for the clutch and primary shaft nuts, these are best loosened first. you can lock the motor via the back wheel with a block of timber if you don't have clutch holder tool.
