Is this worth it? Has anyone here had any experience with these clutch plates?

In order for them to shoehorn an extra plate in the basket the width of the plates are typically thinner than those on a conventional friction plate. Problem is that the thinner plate edges can dig in and groove out your clutch basket more easily. Racer guys don't care so much, but if you are purchasing a clutch for a street bike you plan to ride for a long time, this may not be your best option.

First time I've read that, but you are right. I have these on a couple of bikes. They do work nicely though . I think the 550 kit has been discontinued.

I've got the KZ1000 extra plate kit in my GPz750 motor and it works great.
If you just need new friction's get the KZ1000 standard kit it's the same
plate's the 1000 just runs a few more plate's so just use what you need.

Just check the plates with a micrometer, clean up the steel rings if they are glazed at all and put new springs in it. No need for an extra plate in a 650. The springs are the weak link and lose tension over the 30+ years.

Yes, just measuring the free length of the springs can be one or two mm under spec. I went with HD springs on mine.

You don't need it. The stock clutch is more than enough for the KZ650 engine. Ed

Ed all the KZ fours use the same factory part number clutch plates
the big fours just run more steels and frictions.
I had read a post by APE Jay and he said the track king frictions are
made by the same people who made the factory frictions and are as close
as they could make them and at $64.00 bucks for the standard friction kit
thats hard to beat.
APE doesn't have a standard kit for the small fours so just get the
early KZ1000 kit and have leftovers.
With my KZ1000 extra plate kit I have one more steel and friction then stock
and had one friction left over.

Re: KZ650 Trac King Ape Extra Plate Kit?

I believe he was asking if he needed the "APE "Extra plate" clutch kits " for his KZ650. The link he gave shows it listed for the KZ650 for $99.95. It says "Kits include friction plates, extra steel plate, and heavy duty spring kit. Installs just like a stock clutch. "
My experience with my stock KZ650 that the stock clutch plates, springs, etc. are more than adequate for the power the stock engine produces. That's why I stated he doesn't need the kit. The link he gave states "Trac King Ultra Performance clutch kits are specifically designed for extreme racing applications." I do not believe that describes the way he will be using his bike, so the stock clutch should work just fine. Ed
