Right now I'm running shell Rotella 15-40,but prior to that I was using Mobil 15-50 full synthetic, the shell is fine but with the Mobil I noticed smoother shifts and less engine noise. I have heard mixed things about running synthetic in an engine this old with wet clutches, I noticed no ill effects! It's just crazy expensive when compared to the shell.

This has got to be one of the most discussed tops on this site. Lots of options for sure. Rotella is a popular choice. I like Castrol 20-50 4t, the motorcycle specific blend.

2 rules to follow. Make sure it is JASO-MA or equivalent. This means it is designed to work with a wet clutch. And second, check it every time you ride.

If you do those things you won't have a problem.
If I knew what I was doing all the time life wouldn't be any fun.
