Z1R clutch freeplay increasing as the engine gets
07 Jun 2015 14:33
I have this 15,000 km Z1R that has never been apart at all and the clutch free play increases as the bike warms up. When I start off the next day (cold) the lever goes from almost no free play to quite a lot, Is it the steel plates or the fiber ones that are worn?

I'd be looking at cable stretch or bell crank worm gear stuff under the cover first.
When is the last time you took the little clutch actuator cover off and adjusted the push rod/cable end at the engine?

The clutch cable was replaced when I brought it back to life 1,000 Kms ago. Cleaned and lubed the worm gear/ball bearings and adjusted the free play at the same time. Heat changes the free play on the clutch lever.

Changed out my clutch way back in 83 - 84 with a Barnett W/springs (didn't know how good the stockers were at the time) and was getting your problem from probably the late 90s to till I replaced the plates with NOS plates and new springs in 2012. I got so used to it I tightened it up to almost zero play at start up and then loosening it about a full turn when I got home and shut it down (as it would tighten up after cooling)....... so could be plates and springs....... maybe both ?
I have hardly any change at all with the new plates and new Barnett springs.... was in adjustment checked it often and the assembly has been lubed maybe 3 -4 times......same well lubed cable still after all these years.

I just got looking at it closer and the cable has frayed at the clutch lever! I will get another.
