I have a 79 KZ650, and I am trying to hunt down an exhaust. What years of the 650's would work for me? I'm trying to find a cheaper used exhaust because being a student, it's kind of hard to afford the expensive new exhausts. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

79* (as per my tag under my posts) (the 71 is a Honda I just bought, been searching for parts and got the two momentarily confused)

...What model, A, B, C, or D? A, B and C are the same, the D, or SR model is different.
...Problem is, you can spend as much and even more for a nice stock exhaust. That's why most people go for a 4 in1, or 4 in 2 header, it's often cheaper and shiny new. Unlike most stock exhausts that are usually scratched, dented and rusty. But, sometimes you can get lucky and find a descent used system for a descent price. Ebay is the place.

I agree, hope to get lucky on ebay  , or maybe a swap meet where Kawasaki's are not the main focus

I'm not looking for a mint exhaust, it can have rust or dents, it's my first project bike, and I'm not tearing it down to the frame and redoing the entire bike until I can afford to (should that day ever come). My concern is just getting the bike to run and be able to ride, which requires an exhaust. I have found exhaust sets (albeit rusty and dented) for around 150-200, as opposed to the 300+ for the 4 in 1 exhausts that are bought new. My VIN says that it is a KZ650D, not sure of the difference between that and an SR. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I've had this bike for 3 years now and I have only just been able to get it to sputter.

You can check the frame & engine numbers at the jarlef z650 site.
click!
For the best fit you can probably use the mufflers from any 1980 & earlier KZ650.
The mufflers from the 81-83 KZ650 could be used, but you'll probably have to fab a muffler bracket.
Or just about any KZ750-4, KZ700, ZN700 or ZR750 air cooled models.
Note: center stand clearance could be an issue with a non-stock system. maybe not, though.
Andy-the-Gringo installed a ZR-7 exhaust system on his 70s 650.
