1976 kz900 cylinder o rings have or no? was created by 123vucku
Does a 1976 kz900 a4 have cylinder o rings that go over the 4 outer studs ? Mine when I took it off didn't have them wondering if it needs them . Had a head gasket leak .

No they don't. A common cause of leaks in this area is when it is cleaned scratches leed to the out side. If there are scratches or if you are sanding to clean, do it in a circular pattern around the oil galleys or combustion chambers. It is harder for oil or gas to pass by them. Use fine paper and be sure the surface is perfectly flat.

For a new gasket, a CLEAN surface should need no sealant. If there is damage in that area, I use the high temp. copper silicon. It can weep after a while but not gush. Do not use Permatex. Others use three bond or Yama bond.

Although there are no O-rings around the four outer studs , make sure there are the two alignment pins on the front outer two cylinder studs. Along with doing what they are named (aligning) they also form a sort of oil seal for the front of the motor.......make sure they are not clogged in any way as that (and the two rear studs) is where the oil travels through to get to the head, valves and cams. :)

Yes and you will notice the copper rings around the oil journals, that surface must be clean and even to seal. The rubber large O ring that goes around the cam chain galley must be new, It has a nasty habit of drying out and cracking. I use the one piece early style head gasket because of this.

The aftermarket ones don't last. I had to reuse my Kawasaki one when I had a problem. I ordered the one piece gasket and never will use a two piece again.
