Part numbers - how many on a kz?
06 Jan 2015 10:22
Does anyone know how many different individual parts (not sub assemblies) are on any kz four? over 1000 plus bearings and fasteners? more?
Apart from counting each and every model's parts diagram, is there any way of finding out by looking at part numbers...are they sequential?
A whacky question I know but as well as interesting have a reason I need to know this - approximately.

The 1977 KZ650-B1 has 1,156 different part numbers including several special tools. I didn't need to count them individually or disassemble a bike. The Kawasaki Parts Catalog has a parts number list in the back, so I just counted how many part numbers per page and multiplied times the number of full pages and added in the partial page. Of course, there are FAR more actual parts on the bike since there are multiple parts of the same part numbers. For example - there are 24 cylinder head cover bolts but only 1 part number for them since they are all the same, so my count only includes 1. They are not sequential. Ed

Thanks for that Ed, summing the parts diagram seemed the way to do it.
Over 1000 individual parts, some repeated in pairs and fours, and lots of fasteners and washers. Probably around 10 percent of these are 'unique' model specific.
Something about building a bike up from a frame one appreciates the seemingly endless amount of missing or defective parts.
When restoring an incomplete bike, particularly the Z1000R R2 which are difficult to find the 'unique' parts for it makes it so much harder...and it is easy to lose momentum when waiting for loads of bits.
