Making custom pipes for kz550? was created by daren1093251
SO, for anybody who read my latest post about my nightmare - I mean KZ550, you'll know i had issues with it. NONE THE LESS, I GOT HER RUNNING. Turns out it was the valves, they weren't all opening.

Back on topic - I got the stock pipes for this bike, but they're old and rusty and scratched etc. A few years back I went to what here we call a 'hay day' where people donate stuff and the money goes to paying stuff for the hospital. Anyhom I bought some MINT MINT vance and hines exhausts for 10$!! (crazy right?) The exhausts are for twins, not too sure what bike all i used them for was hanging on the wall in my basement. I thought about this, i feel a lot of hate and insults coming this way, but it's the internet can't hurt?

I was thinking of cutting the "header" part of the v&h and putting them on the headers of my KZ. Not just for sound or anything just so i don't need to buy new exhausts..

If you're going to bit-- and complain for chopping up v&h pipes don't comment, i just want to know if you guys ever done something similar or have any experience doing this, reading online i got some so-so responses. thanks

You can do whatever you want, if the 'exhausts' are for a twin, if you have two tail pipes you may be able to make something work, without pics though, best I can do is speculate.

4 into 1 headers are kind of rare for the 550s, I've got one in the shed, they don't ever come up for sale it seems. Which seems to limit your exhaustoptions

Sorry should of posted some pics. I'll get on with that. The KZ is 4 into 2, no? That;s why I was thinking of chopping the twin ones so i'd have 2 'cans' i guess you can call em, and stick em on the stock headers. 'm sorry for bad explanation english is not my first language as you can surely tell.

Heres a pic of the same (or very darn close) exhausts I got, (they are not welded together in the middle, it's just a platting)

Might be easier to sell the one you have and then purchase one for your bike with the proceeds

Are there any markings on the mufflers that might be a clue as to what V-twin make and model the V&H exhaust system is designed to fit?

Good Fortune! :)

I'd avoid wasting a nice set of pipes just for a pair of silencers, instead find the part number and sell them for something more suitable, unless you have good fabrication skills.

Custom pies are great when you get it right, I did a custom pipe for mine, downpipes from an existing exhaust and a one off marine stainless tailpipe joined just after the collector.

Look for z400j z500 z550 GPz550 GT550 shaft, 550 ltd ZR550 pipes, they all fit except for minor differences on the rear mounting plates. Early GPz600 Ninja water cooled and other 600 variants also have the same downpipes diameter and block spacing but not sure about the fit.

1980 Gpz550 D1, 1981 GPz550 D1. 1982 GPz750R1. 1983 z1000R R2. all four aces

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationYikes! Do yourself and your wallet a favor and don't cut those Vance and Hines pipes! Instead, buy a couple Vance & Hines mufflers (if that's what you plan to use anyway) and sell the complete, un-molested system for a profit. You can buy the mufflers for $60 (see link below) and paint them, and surely you can get more than $60 for the complete exhaust system. Ed
