Z1R starter clutch

My 1978 Z1R one way starter clutch/ gear (i.e the rollers and plate on bolted to the alternator), are not locking ON. I can hear the starter motor spinning but the roller clutch is not engaging most of the time (I can get it to engage by rocking the bike back and forth in gear "sometimes").

I have a spare 1981 GPZ1100B1 motor in as new condition, before I start removing items what I need to know is whether the GPZ starter clutch/gear is compatible to the Z1R in any way (I know they have a different alternator setup to each other but I was hoping the bolt on clutch/gear assembly are the same).

If not I have ordered the correct clutch kit i.e. rollers / springs just in case.
First Permanent ride the Z1R since Dec1977 (220,000km) as of June 2015
Second permanent bike 1989 FJ1200 dyno'd 140RWH, great bike.
Third ride is now the Frankenstein 1981 GPZ1100B1, 1983 fully recon motor fitted LOVE THIS BIKE
Forth my work bike FJ1200 1989 (same type as FJ above)

Is the starter clutch itself bolted down tight to the crankshaft? These clutches can go bad in any number of ways starting with loosening up on the crank, bad flywheels, bad springs and plungers, the assembly itself can loosen up. You really have to take it a parts and inspect it. The GPZ starter clutch will not fit.

Thankyou for your reply,
I did check the rotor and it is mounted solidly on the crank. I added marker lines when I last assembled it to moniter if it is slipping on the taper.
I also added a locking compound to the screws when the clutch was last mounted. So it looks like the springs are sagging or the rollers are not locking in. I am using semi -synth oil which I've been using for around 6 years so ai don't think that is the problem.
Shame the GPZ assembly does not fit. Thanks for that info.

I've got the same problem, I put everything back together and I could not spin the gear clockwise. I know it should spin clockwise freely at least a rotation and a half or so. I haven't gotten any good response regarding this issue if I find the cause of my problem I'll let you know. There's a way of measuring that distance for the rubber dampener using a little ball of clay, that's what I plan on doing but I'm in a wheelchair right now and can't get to the hardware store to buy the calipers to measure. I was missing some parts that thick thrust washer the thin thrust washer we're gone, I put them in because I thought the previous owner forgot to put them back in, he also failed to put in 1 complete roller spring and cap assembly. I will bump my original post you'll see my questions you said you found a fish that shows a washer not being there? Maybe are Z 1 Rs do not have this washer.

I just got my parts (rollers and springs with caps), I'm hoping the springs are the problem.

While you have it pulled apart you should take a real close look at the starter clutch gear; or better yet just replace it to be safe. Ridges wear into the part of that gear that the rollers engage and that makes it slip. The image below compares a new starter clutch gear to a used one. Ed

I've replaced all 3 caps, springs, and rollers. And still when I tighten the bolt everything binds up. Will check clutch gear and take dampener measurement this afternoon.

I've pulled the rotor off but before that I noticed the starter gear was not gripping, I then found the whole clutch plate was loose, I was lucky the three screws holding it did not lockup. The rotor itself was solid on the shaft.
The locating pin was sheered and the rotor was damaged. The rollers have started to indent and the springs are 1/4" shorter than the ones I purchased.
When I re-assembled the unit some time ago I used loctite and made sure all was fitted well (obviously not that well).
To cut a long story short I ended up buying the R099 generator rotor (see below), which I should get next week.

650ed, thanks for highlighting the clutch gear wear, I just checked mine and although it doesn't have roller indents it does have a lot of wear which I wouldn't have picked up if it wasn't for you. The wear has created a sharp ridge (at least 0.2mm at least).
Crap now I have to look for a gear wheel.
