Starting Motor ??? was created by kzdcw
Working on my non-running 77' KZ1000A. Repaired all electrical, replaced gaskets ( oil pan, points housing, pointd cover, dynamo cover, and valve cover ), adjusted valves, timing chain, set points and static timing, Put new oil and filter in it. Without having the carbs. and exhaust on yet, can I see if the electric start button will turn over the motor? Will it hurt anything? Just trying yo see if the electric start button works or not. Put power to the starter motor when I had it out and it turns over fine.

I been using a 5 Amp. 12V battery ( out of my RD400 ) to test all of the electrical on the bike. So far everything is working after repairing a few bad electrical connections in the harness. I had mentioned earlier in the post I want to test the start button operation and after hooking up the re-charged 5 Amp battery, hit the starter button, motor turned over.

Thing I noticed though was after trying the starter button a few times and allowing the motor to turn over momentary the battery acted like it drained and wouldn't turn over the motor anymore? Checked the voltage of Batt. 12.4 Volts. All the other electrical even Horn works fine. Is the Amperage to low on this Battery I'm using preventing the motor from turning over longer?

I know it won't be the right battery to use when the bike is up and running but using it right now just to test.

Stock calls for a 12 AH battery IiRC

Floivanus, I'm sure it's the battery I'm using. Ironically I went out to the garage and checked the Battery voltage again with my Digital Meter. Voltage read 12.6 Volts. Hit starter button, motor turned over quickly then within a few seconds acted like the battery was dead. Re-read the Voltage again, 12.3 Volts. I guess the Battery just won't stay up with the demand of the starter, even though all the other electrical operates fine? I'm assuming that the battery voltage has to be at an optimum for the electric starter to work efficiently?

And I plan on purchasing the Correct battery when the bike gets closer to completion.

Most likely, the bike calls for 12AH so I would assume the starter has to use at least half that to crank the motor. Older batteries are probably only 3/4 the rated capacity so yep your battery doesnt have enough amps.
What is the voltage when the bike cranks? Bet it drops way down

Just hung the lead ends of the Meter to the Battery posts to watch the Voltage drop when hitting stater button. Battery started at 12.6 Volts, hit the starter button and it dropped immediately down to around 6 or 7 volts. Wouldn't turn over the motor very long at all.

Where to you recommend purchasing a Battery? Like to buy the biggest, highest Amp battery I can find that fits.
