Valve adjusting when using other cams
27 Oct 2014 16:07
Now , that my engine is reasambled and running, i am looking for more low end power. I have the GPZ550 1981 engine with Zephyr 550 cylinders .
I have a spare KZ550 engine. Are the cams the same like in my GPZ550 engine? I read somewhere that KZ550 cams produce more low end power.
My question is: do i need to adjust the cams for sure? Or is it likley that valve clearance will be good with the KZ cams?
Thanks and regards
David

best to do a valve adjustment to verify clearance with other cams I think Kz550 cams and GPZ550 cams are different.

yes, the gpz cams are more 'cammy' , that 2 stroke style high rpm power band...that is the 'gpz tune'. Earlier kz550 cams are shorter duration and timed more for midrange.
Put the ZR cams back in it , they are the same as early kz550 i think. If you are really keen use the ZR cams with an airbox and 4-2 pipes. You could even 'dial in' the cams in for more bottom and mids with slotted cam sprockets,

I just have the Kz550 cams not the zr cams. I might give it a try if they have more low and midrange power. I am using a 4-1 absorption style exhaust. Just dont want to have to put in all new shims, so my biggest concern is : is it likley that the valve clearance is ok with the KZ550 cams

Check the clearances when you reinstall/replace cams.
Still recovering, some days are better than others.

All that info is here:
home.comcast.net/~loudgpz/GPZweb/CamsKZZ...KZZXZR550500400.html
It shows how to identify the three types of 550 cams.
Once installed, you will have to re-do the valve clearance checks to verify the clearance.

I had to over-do the "warning"... inside joke from the gpz550 forum.
But I posted the link because it has all of the details on the factory camshaft specs for various 550's.
