I need to redo the top-end on a friend's kz400 - I'm wondering if the bolt-patterns / etc of a kz440 head & jugs etc (pistons ++ ) are a direct bolt-on.

Time is somewhat of the essence, so whatever insights you've got or ways to actually figure out how to know for sure - Engine part swaps generally get a bad wrap, but I haven't been able to find anything on this particular swap, good or bad. The nice thing about this engine is its got a six speed, but the bad part is that something blew a hole through cylinder #1. That's another story for another thread. Right now, Im trying to figure out what to buy off craigslist or ebay, so your thoughts about the kz440 jug/head swap are what I'm needing first.

Thanks!

the 440 has an external oil pressure line that supplies oil to the head that the 400 didn't. Im not sure exactly what you have to do, but the guys over on kz400.com would. the 440 is basically a bored out 400 with some improvements.

If I knew what I was doing all the time life wouldn't be any fun.
