head gasket layers?

I've never pulled the head - I was surprised to see a metal head gasket with three layers. Is that normal or did someone put three gaskets on for some reason (to stop a leak maybe)?

New ones are pricey. I'm thinking about reusing the old one, but you all can probably tell me how bad an idea that is.

Thanks

It is a laminated gasket, I think moriwaki used first them so kawasaki copied them.

The older zeds had a one piece gasket originally, but the part number was superseded by the 3 peice laminated type.

Don't re- use it, once clamped down and a few heat cycles and you won't get a proper seal. Also replace the oil feed O rings at the side.

MLS = Multi Layer Steel, arguably the best head gasket type available.
