Found a crack !!! was created by kzdcw
My left chain sprocket cover off my 77' KZ1000A has a crack on the lower right cover bolt and curves to the left just downstream of the shifter shaft cover hole. Crack is about an 1 1/4" long. Besides having it welded, is there something that you would recommend to use to bond the crack on the backside of the cover? JB Weld perhaps or something else?

Instead of having it welded you could probably just get another cover unless that one is desirable.

Doug, No the cover is not desirable but would like to repair it. Haven't priced another cover yet? What is this foam rubber insulator thing inside the cover? Is it some sort noise suppressor? Are the even available any more? Mine is getting a bit worn but what do you expect for 37 years old.

Ok. Normally the covers crack when the small dowel pins aren't lined up between the cover and case halves.

The foam with the metal screen is just for noise insulation just like you mentioned. The Z1's didn't have it due to the chain oiler.

I think I'm going to try a little JB Weld or similar Metal Epoxy first, before replacing the cover.

Waste of time and effort. Check out fleabay. I bought one for around 10 dollars maybe 20 with shipping. They aren't worth trying to fix. Trust me, I broke mine the same way, just like Doug mentioned. I didn't misalign the dowel, I placed it in wrong hole and when I torqued it I heard it crack. Oh well, its been replaced with one that looks exactly same condition. Don't sweat it.

Appreciate the insight from all, but had some JB Weld already so doesn't cost anything to try. If it doesn't work I'll purchase another cover.
