clutch hub nut 78 KZ650 b2 was created by KZB2 650
Have all the needed parts numbers for changing out the starter clutch except the clutch hub nut. The Rear thrust washer is 92026-116 and the front is 92026-022 but thats where the diagrams stop and show no nut.

Anybody know for sure? I for sure want the original thing holding this together. Thanks.

I believe you'll find that nut is shown on the transmission diagram (see image below). It is still an "Active" Kawasaki part, so any dealer can get it for you. Partzilla.com lists it at $6.16. Ed

I wondered about that but the washer #16 is different. Will be ordering this now. Thanks.

Also Ed if you check this again What do you think my chances are I can get by without buying the main housing (13194-007) I suppose I won't really know till its apart .... I'll be getting the main gear, roller, springs and pins.

Also I might have to modify my sears impact driver #2 Phillips head to a JIS bit. Where was that that you showed what you needed to do. Was it mainly just grinding down the tip to allow it to sink in farther ??

It is recommended to replace the clutch nut whenever it is disturbed.

There is a factory clutch holder tool but from experience I would lock the engine with the back wheel and use an air tool on it.

Are you doing this in-frame? I have to do just this job but I'm leaving it a while as i would much prefer to do it with the engine removed.

I don't see what that part number is, but I would replace the whole starter clutch mechanism including the starter gear while I was in there.

Here's the JIS info. Ed

I have ground down the tips of DeWalt #2 and DeWalt #3 Phillips to make them fit JIS screws. The large crosshead screws on the cases take modified #3 bits (or genuine #3 JIS bits). To modify the DeWalt bits you need to grind the very tip a little, then test fit, then grind a little more and test fit, etc. until the bit no longer "rocks" back and forth in the screwhead. Picture 1 below shows how a DeWalt #3 bit fits the case screws of my KZ650 after being ground properly. The #2 DeWalt bits can be modified the same way to fit smaller JIS screws. Pictures 2 and 3 below shows DeWalt #2 and #3 modified bits.

I did find a place that sells authentic JIS bits. They don't list the #3 bit, but if you contact them they can provide the #3 JIS bits even though they are not listed on the website. These folks were very easy to work with, and the authentic bits do work great. Here's their site:

Pictures 4 & 5 below show a comparison between my home made modified bits with the authentic JIS bits.

Thinking your right and will pick up the complete assembly .... defently don't want to do it again and I use the starter a lot. Also will pick up new bits too.

TC I will be removing the motor too. My days of crawling around on the ground are sadly about over (that old age thing) and since I just did it for the rebuild it should go pretty well.

Won't hurt to clean all that brake in material outta the lower end and pan anyway. Going to pick up a clutch holder tool off ebay (ebc) and have my mechanic friend use his impact tool on the nut for the clutch nut ...... sounds like they put it on to stay. Good luck with yours.
