Oil pressure light

Hey all,
Bike has been running great and then the other day I was cruising and then out of nowhere the oil light flashes a few times. I immediately kill it and let it cool off and then checked the oil. Level was fine. I took it home and it came back on near home and stayed on. I babied it back knowing the risk. I put up on the center stand and let it sit for about a week, oil level is perfect.

Fast forward to today and decided to check it out. Ran the bike and oil light never turned on. Kept rpms lower, probably never over 5k rpm. Short trip to a buddies and no problems at all.

So, I was going to order a oil pump and it looks like thats going to be a PITA to replace. But if the pump was bad, wouldn't the oil light always be on? Is there pressure build up problems on these? Or maybe bad sensor? What do you guys think?

Thanks!
/Dave

Mine did that. Was a short from an exposed wire. Actually I pinched it during a stator replacement.

I thought about shorts but didn't look into that yet.

I read some of them can flash the oil light if they get air trapped in the system. Sometimes if they install new filter it has to be burped. A worn out oil pump usually flashes the light at idle and then goes off when you rev it.

Twice I've had the oil light come on. In each case it was due to a short at the oil pressure sensor caused by moisture or condensation or crud and was fixed by cleaning around the top of the sensor with a paper towel. This is the sensor under the ignition cover on the right hand end of the crank. I had to remove the timing plate (3 screws) with the pulse coils to get at it properly. A single wire goes to the top of the sensor and the area around it was cruddy and causing intermittent short to ground.
The manual should describe a test for the sensor.

Hope you don't have to replace oil pump.
