Check and make sure your sprocket nut didn't come off first,if that's intact try adjusting the clutch.

Not sure what bike you have , but on most 70's kz there are three clutch adjusters:
One underneath the inspection cover (2 x M6 bolts) this is the coarse adjuster
One cable adjuster
one fine adjuster on the clutch lever.
Do them from the coarse adjuster first, then cable adjuster finally the lever adjuster. Google kawasaki kz900 clutch adjustement as they have a ball and ramp actuator working a shaft that goes through one of the gear clusters.
It is difficult to explain but I'm sure it has been discussed here many a time before.

Just to make sure, it won't go in to second while you are riding it right? Because the won't go into anything but 1st and neutral without momentum.

It helps to indicate the model, as there are two basic but opposite clutch adjustments, depending upon what bike it is.

Martin, I hope you have better luck that I did trying to get that info. When I suggested he add his bike's model and year to his signature line all I got back was a wise-crack (see link below). I don't understand his reluctance to make it easy for folks to help him. :S Ed
