And you Sir, qualify for "Cast Iron Butt" #2

Cast iron butt, I don't think so. I have owned it since new and it was my only means of tranport when I was in my 20's. I have ridden it from California to New York and back a few times and into Baja Mexico and Canada. Those miles are spread out out over 36 years so it's not like I rode 150,000 miles on it in a few years. Very reliable bike, I would not hesitate to ride it cross country tomorrow.

Splitting a case is perhaps at the top of the engine work list. $1500 can get you plenty of KZ, even if you have to drive 500 miles in a van to get it. I got my 79 stock 650 (10,400 miles) for $0 and wrenched it back on the road in a matter of months without opening the engine. So perhaps what you have there shouldn't be your first project bike. Depending how it was stored and the original reason for getting into the engine and leaving it open, makes me think about how deep into your wallet you will reach to get that bike road worthy.

just my 79 cents.

It's been my experience that splitting an engine case doesn't cost much. Usually all the bearings are fine, all are roller bearing except the rods. Roller bearings are very rugged. So to split the case and clean it all out shouldn't be much of an issue. Gasket kit, seal kit, some yamabond and a new timing chain is about it.
