Oil cooler for a KZ750 B1 1976 was created by Winkler
Hey Guys,

Finally I got time again for my KZ750 B1 after a year abroad.

I was thinking if anyone had experience with mounting an oil cooler system/grill on a KZ750 B1 1976? I have been looking into a LOCKHART system, but I am not sure if it fits?

Hope some of you have experience with it and have some pictures to share for illustration!

Regards Andreas

I looked for one for my 1979 KZ750 B4 and they did not make one. Possible to build something but no aftermarket kit available that I ever found.

I looked for an oil cooler back in the early 80's, but now that synthetic oil is available, I don't think a 750 twin needs a cooler. The engine doesn't stress the oil that much.

I studied the oil passage diagrams in the manual, but couldn't think of a valid reason to go to all the trouble of installing one. Too much trouble for too little gain.

Thanks for the prompt responses guys .

Interesting, so the fact that it only has two cylinder and not four, combined with new synthetic oil then it won´t overheat during city cruises?

One of my friends has a CB750 and he has a LOCKHART oil cooler on it.

I am about to order some new brake hoses and the I am off to the Danish MOT-Test to get my numberplate :-D

IMHO, a stock Kawi twin will not have any problems running without an oil cooler in just about any climate that you will be able to stand riding in. Use syn oil if you want to, I don't think that's necessary either. The base oil stock almost never fails, it's the additives that break down or get used up so I am a fan of changing oil before maximum interval.

WOW! I see that you are in Copenhagen! :woohoo: In my opinion having an oil cooler on a street bike there would be a total waste. In fact, for most of your year it might even prevent the engine from reaching proper operating temperatures necessary to evaporate condensation from the motor oil. Of course this could be circumvented using a thermostat, but since that would prevent oil from circulating through the cooler why have one? Here are the average and all-time high air temperatures in Denmark. It doesn't even get warm there much less hot enough to consider installing an oil cooler. I don't need an oil cooler on my 4 cylinder KZ650 here in MD, and every summer the temperatures are in the 90's (F). I suggest you use your money for something else. ;) Ed

I would suggest spending the money on Stainless Steel brake lines instead. Just my opinion.

Thanks again guys,

Much appreciated with your answers. This is why a forum like this is great! Otherwise I would probably have used money on an oil cooler.

Kaw-a-holic: Yes stainless steel or reinforced brake hoses are being made next week. :-) Next week program, new brake hoses and tires!!

You must not live in Copenhagen, I can't imagine anyone living there having enough money left to buy a bike

I last visited Copenhagen around 1980 when a couple of friends got married there.
