Starter clutch just spinning not grabbing was created by That Poptart
Dear KZ dudes,

I bought a 1980 KZ750 G1 LTD twin a couple weeks ago for a first bike. It rode really well but the electric start wouldnt work. Like nothing would happen, I would pull in the clutch and hit the ignition and nothing would happen. I just got it to wear I can hit the button and the starter will engage and start spinning but it is not grabbing and will not turn the engine over. I figured that the springs in my stater clutch went to shit. Then after pulling my starter clutch off i inspected it and not only were my springs bad but also the plate that kept the rollers and pins together had cracked. SO i decided to replace my whole starter clutch assembly. I replaced it with a used one. I put it on and i could feel it grabbing! I was so excited but i didnt think the battery had enough power to turn it over so i put it on the charge. THen next morning i came out and tried to electric start..... it still spun without grabbing!! HELP! Do you think i should replace the springs in the new "used" starter clutch??

For the amount of work it takes to replace most starter clutches NEVER use, used parts, get new parts.

Trust me, I searched for DAYS trying to find a new starter clutch but kawasaki discontinued the starter clutch. And then every store i looked at and it said it had it, they would tell me they couldn't order it because of it being discontinued.

Not sure ... I just checked my mail and Mary at PZilla e mailed me back on 7-18 and said they could have the 2 main parts 13194-007 and 21167-005 in 3 to 5 days from their ware house ...... maybe email her? Are the 2 main parts I asked about the same as you need? Not sure maybe your 750 is diff?

You do not need the entire clutch assembly just a few parts, rollers, springs and plungers those you can still get. Since you have a used clutch assembly use the good plate and then replace the other parts.

Yea, the part number for my KZ750 G1 LTD twin is 13193-1001 for the whole starter clutch assembly. That's going to be my next step for replacing it is to buy new springs, rollers, and pins (which they still make) and just use the better assembly right now. Thanks you guys!

Have someone sandblast the surface where the rollers touch. It'll take the polish off the part. Bob
