So, I know I've seen threads that had some discussion about what is the valve compression tool preferred when changing shims. I have to get one so looking for best choices and place to get good price. Got me a tight motor! Hoping I'm not out of shim range or I'm going to lose all summer pulling the head. What do you use?

Uh, that is a valve spring compressor indeed but wouldn't I need the head off? I'm talking about the little tool like the one made by motion pro that is used to change out shims. I have one on the way but for the life of me I don't see how it works. Maybe when it arrives it will make sense to me. So the latest is Dyna s is half installed, valve cover is off and I have some shims that will need to be changed out, and just sitting there my fork seal failed. Funny how these were things that I knew I would need to address but I am losing the best summer weather I've seen in a while. Oh, well, as my brother in Sturgis with a home built V8 bike with a sidecar that caught fire, it's a journey. Later, Keith

take a stout screw driver and heat it up cherry red then bend an offset in the end that looks about right, then toss it in a can full of old oil to cool off.Theres your tool for compressing the spring/bucket.
Take a piece of 1/4" thick steel strap about 3/4" wide and grind a wedge out of it from top to bottem on the 3/4" side, theres the tool to hold the bucket down while changing the shim. :)

I tossed the lever and use only the batwing.

Hand-turn the crankshaft with the 17mm fake-nut accessible under the points cover in order to depress the valve, which substitutes for the lever.

Insert the batwing and carefully hold it in position whereby it will catch the edge of the bucket and hold the bucket down (away from the cam) as the crankshaft is again carefully hand-turned to point the cam away from the shim.

This leaves space between the cam base and shim whereby the shim may be removed and replaced.

When the shim has been replaced, again carefully hand-turn the crankshaft with the 17mm fake-nut in order to depress the valve and loosen the batwing so it may be removed.

In other words, the batwing is keeping the bucket depressed instead of needing the cam to depress the bucket.

Good Fortune! :)
