Did the pods change the character of the ride much? More top end less bottom end?
Something like that, yes. I've tuned it for a strong upper midrange, mostly.
My 750 came with Keihin CV34s, which I had trouble finding pilot jets for. I love the Mikunis, they're easier to live with. Also, I had some Emgo paper cone filters on the Keihins for a while, they stop flowing if you get 'em wet. Utter turds.
Some people complain of an outer cylinder leaning out if they catch a crosswind from that side, but the dual flange filters don't have that problem.

You know, I'm realizing how hard this project would be for a reason I hadn't fully considered (i.e., aside from difficulties of getting the parts). I just did my first valve adjustment and and it was ridiculous how religiously I had to study two different manuals to make sure I was doing it right (the factory manual and Hayes). I couldn't imagine doing more complicated work without the benefit for good documentation and unfortunately it seems all manuals for the zr550G are in Japanese. How would I even know what the valve clearances (for instance) should be?

I live in Tokyo Japan.
You have nice 550.
I read the thread.
It is very difficult to install 4 valve to 2 valve Engine.
Because piston forms and crankshaft..etc very different.
If you want more power, use the Wiseco piston and Keihin or Mikuni flat-valve carburetor.
I think Flat-valve cab is very effective for ZR.

Tue, any muppet can throw a big wedge of cash at some Harley to win street cred, mainly among non-bikers or the back patch 1% headbangers-all who started on jap bikes anyway.

building an old kawi is my idea of street cred, each to their own though (smiley)

As for 16 valves -personally I much preferred the 'tune' of a gpz11 to a gsx11.
That mental red line arm wrenching rpm power always seems faster than the ruler straigh tourque cure of a gsx - a lot of racers will disagree here i know.
Had them both.
