Now back to my initial question of the gap for 72mm rings. Since you are so very experienced do you think you could give me a double check on my math? That would be most helpful Dr Gamma.
According to my math:
72mm = 2.83"
nominal ring end gap should be about .009" - .011"
Slightly too much gap is not a problem, too tight can cause rings to break when they heat up.

thats a big 10-4.
if ring ends expand and touch it,it is trying to rip the top of the piston off.

I totally see what you mean about te "feel" with the metal. Though roughly they gave the same results the metal allowed me to see how much to take off one of the piston rings. I rounded up just to be safe because at 500 dollars a set for the pistons; id rather not have them get ripped apart.

Come on now,how many of you have been around long enough to remember using a match book cover to set points?

I have to raise my hand on this one because in a pinch a match book cover worked not only to set the points put to make sure they were clean after using the feeler gauge.
I own a couple of feeler gauges because they keep walking off.
