It's time for a new chain and rear sprocket. I'm thinking I may want to go a little lower with the ratio. I'm running a 15 on front and 39 on rear now. I remember from my four wheeler days that one tooth on the front was equivalent to two or three on the rear but I don't remember the amount of teeth we used to run. Is that the rule of thumb with these bikes?

Is that 630 chain - sprockets?

I'm running 15 / 29 on 630 chain - sprockets.

can cruise at 80 mph around 5500 rpm.

I would try 15 / 35

If you are buying new stuff, look at moving down to a 530 or 525 chain / sprocket setup and get rid of the 630 gear.

Yea its 630 stuff. Was thinking about the 530 swap but wasn't sure where to find the correct parts. How does your bike do on take off with the higher gear? Sometimes I feel like mine is too high geared when I leave the line but I'm always looking for another gear on top

when I was running a 14 / 35 I didn't even use any gas out of the hole just let out clutch..........

could take off in second with a little throttle.

the 15 / 29 needs a little prodding to get going......

Go to Z1Enterprises for the 530 conversion. Give them a call and they are great at assisting you.
If you go 530, you will find a lot more choices AFA chains are concerned.

JT Sprockets has an online catalogue where you can compare bolt circle diameter, center hole, spline and offset if you need that. Here's a link: CLICK

Your current final drive ratio with 15/39 is 2.6, the suggested 15/35 will be 2.33.

Going to 530 you need to correct for sprocket size (and chain length) - 630 15/35 (ratio 2.33) translates to 530 17/40 (ratio 2.35).

I'm running 530 17/42 (ratio 2.47) on my GPz 1100 and will occasionaly try to shift into 6th - since sprockets and chain are only about a month old I'll probably swap the 42 for a 40 or maybe even a 38.

Edit: Just did a quick search on JT's site and it seems the sprockets for a 2000 ZX-12R will work for you, they're JTF 517 front and JTR 488 rear.

Here's a link to your current 630 setup (if they were JT):

and here's the 530 equivalent for comparison:

Ok so I got some 530 sprockets but the front one doesn't have the shoulder that the original had. Do I need to apace it out some with some washers or something?

Hate to keep this topic going but I'm stiff having trouble. The non-shouldered sprocket I bought was for a zx-9. I decided to buy the conversion sprocket for a kz1000 and it doesn't have the holes for the retainer. It was for an 80 model. Do they not have the same locking assembly as the 82? What's going on here?

i believe that the 80 model sprocket should have a splined fold over washer and that it and the 82 have a different amount of splines.

I just did a 530 conversion on an 82 KZ1000K LTD, using new parts that I had here. I used a flat front sprocket and cut a spacer out of a old fork tube I had laying around, rear sprocket was a bolt on and chain was cut to size by putting it on the bike and cutting off the extra links.

It was a friend's bike, he stopped by to see me and I wouldn't let him leave with the chain and sprockets that were on the bike. They were that bad.

Rear sprocket was KZ750 twin/ZX12R, 750 twin front sprocket had wrong spline count, so the front sprocket may have been for a ZX12R also. JT Sprockets website can tell you what fits.

Edit:
I just checked the JT website and both front and rear sprockets were for the ZX12R. But again, I had to make a spacer to make the front sprocket work (one of the reasons I have a lathe).
