Got KZ400 Running, lots of top end noise was created by nebraskajeff
I rescued a 79" kZ400 for $80 bucks and got the freshly rebuilt carbs and my homemade airbox/carb boots on it today and fired it up. Starts right off, runs nicely but it has what sounds like a top end noise and by noise I mean almost a knocking sound. Does not seem to effect the way it runs. Have very limited experience with KZ's but my son had one a couple years ago and never heard anything like this. Anything thoughts right off the top? Too loud to be cam chain, I was thinking maybe a broken valve spring but would that not be effecting performance> Any help is appreciated guys

My brother is a Suzuki guy also. And he works at Kawasaki.
It might be better if I heard it in person. I've hopped up a few 440s
and have spare parts if needed. It could be valves out of adjustment.
How's compression?

Went to do the valve adjustment this morning and too my surprise the right side intake adjuster nut was gone! Pulled the valve cover off of it and found it at rest. Got it back together, valves adjusted and the noise is gone. It was just that one slapping loose in there

Wow, surprises that wasn't affecting performance, glad you got it sorted out. Fwiw, traffic has been down on this site lately, it comes and goes.

Mine:
04 Honda rebel 250(wifes)
04 GSXR 750(bolt on galore)
98 CBR 600F3(filter, pipe, adjustable cam sprokets, dyno tune)
76 KZ900A (LTD gauge pods, crash bars, LTD(style)pipes, dyna coils and ignition, headwork and mild port cleanup by cavanaugh racing, K&N filter pods, heck I dunno.

Thats the funny part, performance was still good. I'm just getting use to the site. I own several GS Suzuki's and I'm on the GS Resources forum. You can almost always find 75 to 100 users on during the day, quiet over here in comparison. Summer doesn't help either, people are out riding :)
