I'm thinking about getting an oil cap that shows engine temperature. Anyone know what range is considered normal operating temperature? I'm not used to air cooled bikes so I really have no idea if it's running hot or not.

I have one of those on my 650, I was curious about temps when I when with higher compression pistons.

They give you an idea of the oil temp, which is normally between 120 and 150°F.

If I knew what I was doing all the time life wouldn't be any fun.

Keep in mine that the smaller 4's, 650-750's have very good cooling capability for their displacement and HP. They are air cooled engines, and can run hot under some circumstances, but they are designed to do so, and a pretty tolerant. The oil cap thermometer is nice to compare how hot the oil get under different riding conditions, but it is measuring the oil at the lowest temp in the engine. The cylinders and head get WAY hotter. You can get an IR thermometer from Harbor Freight and check the head temps if you want. That's a more accurate way of estimating engine temp.

If I knew what I was doing all the time life wouldn't be any fun.
