Hello every one,

The question is can and should you put 1979 head on top of a 1980 engine ?

why not 1979 and 1980 shared the same head on some engines. Is it a smog head?

The pic you posted is a SMOG head. You can see the four ports just above the spark plugs.

yep a smog head. You will need a MKII or smog cover.

The red circles are the exhaust ports, for this reason the head is called a smog head or emission head.

On the head cover, you can see the front pockets.

It also has a square end not rounded.

I got a cover from 1979 shaft that will work. Its black.
I guess I will need block off covers for the smog ports.

Tore the the bike all the way down ,re painted, powder coat stuff, bought new stuff as I was tearing it down to replace worn and broken stuff.
Now I just have to remember where it all goes. Pics will follow.

Thanks to all !

That's actually a valid point. Some 79 motors had 15 pin cranks with 30 tooth cam sprockets. 80's had 16/32.
