77' KZ1000A
2001 KZ1000 P into a 77' Chass was created by kzdcw
Well I decided to keep my non-running 77' KZ1000A. Even though it's going to cost a lot to rebuild/restore it, as a Hobbyist it's therapy for me. And owning an original 73' Z1 903 back then, I like to capture that emotion again. With this 77' KZ1000A that I have now, a couple of you guys recommend looking into a used Police KZ motor. Saw on on ebay a 2001 32,000 mile engine with Good Compression. Has no Kick Starter and no Carburetors. Question First of all, will it fit into my bike? Will my carburetors work? What kind of issues do you think I may have with this swap? Or I'm just barking up the wrong tree? This is just an idea and am rolling with the suggestions the form has made. Of course, I could always rebuild what I have, but the above motor option certainly was a more cost effective alternative since the bike will have a rest-mod look. Again, all of your help is and has been greatly appreciated!

no expert by any means but did a 2001 even come with kick start? Mines an 82 ltd and it don't have one. Maybe the police version is different?

No it doesn't have a kick starter on the Police motor. I'm just trying to sort out what all is needed to make the swap?

I see. I don't know if it is a direct bolt in or not. 1 option would be to fab or move some motor mounts if it don't fit. Dimension wise I would think they are the same. Most police vehicle have lots of miles on them so I would watch for that. good luck.

it is not a direct bolt in.
you will have to fabricate mounts.
your carbs will work but you will have to use the early model boots that match the carb and possibly elongate the bolt holes.
not to discourage this swap has been done many times, but it does take some fab work.
and you are basically installing an unkown engine.
do you gamble?
if you rebuild your engine you will know what you have and it will last forever(or really close to it) .

Leon, Very good point and was waiting to hear some solid input from the forum members to help me make a better decision. I didn't realize it would take motor mount fab. and whatever falls into place?

Anyone else that may have done a swap like this and sorted out what was needed?

I have an '83 M1 and a '77 A1.
- The carb mounts from the A1 will work on the J-model engine as-is. The carbs on the A1 are taller than the BS-34s from the J-model, so tank clearance shouldn't be a problem - note that going the other way (putting the A-model carbs on a J-model frame) requires major tank work.
- The frames are VERY different, I doubt the engine will bolt in without surgery. The cutover from the older A-series engine to the J-series motor was 1981 IIRC.
- Electrically, the differences will be negligible ASSUMING you get all of the accessory ignition parts.
- The exhaust systems will swap without a problem.
Other than that, you should be in pretty good shape. Personally, I would just rebuild the A-series motor, but to each his own.

Cynjut, Rebuilding the original motor is the way I am going to go. I was just trying to save cost of a rebuild and purchase a used motor. There's one on ebay 01' Police motor that appears to be in good shape but you never know what it may be all about. Any member on the forum rebuilding these motors besides sending it out to a business?

I rebuilt my A1 from the ground up over the course of about 2 months in the spare time from my job, wife, kids, etc. Rebuilding the engine isn't very challenging - I think I spent more of tools than I did on parts. The only thing that was a real "expense" was cleaning up the cans and replacing the pistons with some oversized Wiseco pistons. Everything else just worked.
There's a really cool video that describes dismantling and rebuilding the KZ1000 engine on here somewhere. It's not quite real time, but they get the thing down to the crank in about 15 minutes, and back together in another 20. There are a few tests that you need to do to make sure mechanical quality (plastigaging the main bearings for example), but if you 're just going to replace the pistons and/or valves, you can probably get the whole thing done in a concentrated 10 hours or so.
