Engine swap, CB750f in '94 KZ550 frame?
03 Jun 2014 11:41
Ok well I have my KZ550 which I found out was actually blown. I wanted to rebuild it until I realized that 4 pistosn for the KZ550 is over 700$. I don't know if i'm getting ripped off over here in Canada, but that seems crazy! If anybody could locate me somewhere with a better price for 4 pistosn and rings, please do!
But heres the real question ; I also have CB750f motor (not sure of the year, I think it's a 79ish) and I would like to put it in the KZ550 frame if I can't find better priced piston and ring kits. The motor looks the same as the KZ, but I only had a quick glance at it. Anybody know if it's a direct fit or I need to weld new mounts and all those things? Not really the biggest mechanic in the world.
Thanks!

The CB engine is a direct fit to the KZ frame. Everything is exactly the same. UJM & all that. Honda & Kawasaki got together way back when & decided that it would be really nice of them to make their parts completely interchangeable. Just like what Ford & GM did. JKOC. just kidding of course.

But seriously, you should be able to get a good used motor for less than $150, although right now they may be scarce. Fall/winter is the time to start looking for used motors.
