I have a Derale oil cooler for a KZ650. It goes to a custom oil filter plate. Since I am building another 650 I was wondering if this unit is good or bad. Stick it on or just go with standard plate and forget the cooler? Can't find much on it. Thanks....

That is a good oil cooler you have there. It also has a built in themostatic valve. I think yiu should keep it.

Btw, could take some good pictures of the filter adapter plate? Many of the k650 users would appreciate it.

Thanks!

I have a Derale oil cooer on my 750 which was on it when I bought the bike over 10 years ago. Not much I can say about it really other than it appears to work and has not given any trouble.

That's a decent brand cooler, but more to the point - do you need one on the bike? Unless you live in a very hot climate, race on a track, or regularly commute in horrible traffic you probably don't need an oil cooler on a stock KZ650. Ed

Ok here's the picture of the plate which connects the hoses to the motor, As far as I can tell it just replaces the stock oil filter cover and I am pretty sure it uses the existing oil filter bolt. Checking parts diagrams at kawasaki.com it looks like the 750/4 shares the same oil filter cover with a long list of 650s and 1000 and a few more models.

Lots of road dirt underneath eh :)

hahaha. Yes the bike gets used quite a bit. Rusty, crusty and honest :)
That plate/ cover is more like a cup. The side wall is about 2 cm deep whereas the stock cover is almost flat. You will notice that the bolt is recessed. Its a bit messy changing the filter but install would be simple.

Thermostatic valve! That is one important thing I wanted to know. I'll get some pics. Ed I understand the need is not great(esp here in New England) but as long as it has some thermostatic regulating qualities I do not see the drawback. Operating temp should be a range but a steady less fluxuating temp I would I suspect be wanted. Just as water jacketed/cooled engines usually have a longer anticipated life. I'm 99% sold on installing it. Thanks for the info.

If you do use it I suggest you check the temperature of the engine after a decent ride. You want to be sure the thermostat is permitting the engine to reach full operating temperature. If it runs too cool, condensation in the oil will accumulate rather than evaporating off and that could cause damage. Ed
