Points Cover Housing?
03 Jun 2014 07:44 - 03 Jun 2014 07:46
I want to replace my cracked points cover housing on my 77' KZ1000A. Seen a couple of 82' KZ1000 J2 housings that look to be the same that I have. There appears to be a slightly different casting inside of the 82' but bolts holes and seals looks the same? Will these 2 housings interchange?

Without looking at my motorcycles, I seem to recall that you can use 998cc points covers on 1015cc motors but not vice versa. This has to do with the depth of the points covers.

Mcdroid, I believe the 82' KZ1000 J2 is a 1015cc motor like my 77' KZ1000A. So if that the case, it seems like these 2 year points cover housings should be the same?

Nope...the 1981 (and on) J series motors are 998cc. The last 1015cc sold was the 1981 KZ1000-C4 model. All other 1015 models ceased production in 1980 with the model year.

Then I guess, if you can use 998cc points covers on 1015cc earlier motors, then this 82' KZ1000 points cover "housing" that holds the points will fit? Were talking about the housing not the points cover, right?

Re: Points Cover Housing?
03 Jun 2014 20:23 - 03 Jun 2014 20:34The mentioned "housing" is what Kawasaki calls the "right hand engine cover." And the J model cover has a different part number than the cover on a KZ1000 model.kzdcw wrote: Then I guess, if you can use 998cc points covers on 1015cc earlier motors, then this 82' KZ1000 points cover "housing" that holds the points will fit? See kawasaki.com for engine covers shared among various Kawasaki models.
Lots of good info on kawasaki.com, including parts diagrams, part names, part numbers, models sharing same part, availability, etc. Here's a link for help with navigating the site and finding information.

Accordingly, it's unlikely that an 82' KZ1000 J2 "points cover housing" (i.e., right hand engine cover) would serve as replacement for the damaged cover on 77' KZ1000A at hand.
Good Fortune!

Can't speak for the housings, only the covers for interchangeability.
