KZ1000J3 - Clutch Cable Replacement
01 Jun 2014 16:25
Hi,
I am looking in the manual and changing the clutch cable seems fairly straight forward - if I am assuming wrong please tell me and I will get it done by my mechanic. Three questions. 1. Do I need to pull off the outer release gear to get out the old cotter pin and put in a new one? 2. Once I release the circlip and pull off the outer release gear will the inner release gear fall out with ball bearings or will it stay in place? What is the best way to lubricate a new cable?
Thanks,

For lubing the cable....
I lube mine with clean motor oil. I just make a little Saran Wrap funnel and twist-tie it to the top of the cable. I put about a couple tablespoons of oil in it and hang it overnight. You must put something under the bottom end to catch the excess oil or you will wake up to a mess (how do I know this?) On the clutch cable, wrap the center adjuster with Saran Wrap and twist tie it in a fashion that will allow the oil to flow to the bottom section of cable but not run out at that point. This maintenance should be done to all cables at least every other year (or more if you ride a lot in dusty or wet conditions). Be sure to lube the ends of the cable (especially where they fit into the handlebar levers) as that is where the greatest probability of wear & breakage is. I use white lithium grease for the ends.
