KZ1000P leaking valve cover gasket question
29 May 2014 19:41
New owner of a KZ1000P, my valve cover is leaking oil, I am working on loosening then cover bolts, but I am wondering if I am going to have to remove the fairing? If so, is there a write up on the best way to do this?
Thanks in advance.

I don't know about the fairing. Need a kawi factory manual for working on these bikes. careful on the 10mm cover bolts. I think the manual says something like 110 inch-pounds for those but I always use about 60 - 70 maximum. You need an accurate (low range) torque wrench.

It depends on the fairing.
The "Vetter" type will require you to "at least" loosen the screws that hold the fairing to the bracket so that you can tilt the fairing forward. I find that removing the rear screws and loosening the front screws is usually enough.
Also - my book says 12 ft pounds of torque for the valve cover bolts. This will strip out about 50% of them. 6 ft pounds (72 inch pounds) is more than enough. You don't really need a well calibrated wrench, just be gentle. When they stop, don't force them.
When you get read to install the half-moons, it doesn't kill you to throw on a little RTV (I like blue) in the corners to help get a good seal at those weak spots.

Yes I have the manual, even the Police supplemental manual, but none of them cover the faring removal. Thanks for the heads up on the bolts, I will be careful.
