transmission

77 kz650c.
Just changed the oil after sitting for 10+ years. Had it started and cycled through the gears just enough to know it was still running before changing. Everything was good. Now, with the wheel off for other work, it sounds awful!! Holding the clutch in and going through the gears it sounds like I have a completely trashed trans! I am a novice. I have rebuilt the carbs and rear brakes. Now I have to rebuild the carbs????? Just in time for summer!! Admittedly, When I drained the oil it was crazy black and only about a quart . I assumed I was going to have to do another change after a few miles(since its been so long), so I started it after adding a new quart just because. Did I screw the pooch here?

Did you check the oil level using the site glass with the bike on the centerstand? Ed

Your bike needs 3.7 quarts of oil. Anything less than that and you run a real risk of real damage to every bearing ib the bike.

I looked at the level indicator but couldnt see anything due to age and whatever else. It ran decent before But just cycling through for 1.5 minutes I noticed the noise. It sounded like it was coming from the "crank case"? If thats the name of it. Where the kickstart is. I did not pull the main drain plug just the filter. I know everyone is rolling their eyes and shaking their head at me right now and I don't blame you! All this right after confirming the order for caliper rebuild parts and new Tire!!! Very disheartening.

The only way I know to change the oil without pulling the drain plug is to pull the filler plug, turn the bike upside down, and shake it.   However, that is not the recommended procedure. Ed

Also make sure the oil you use is JASO certified, It makes a big difference for wet clutch systems, most people use Rotella T, that you can get at Walmart for about 13.00 a gallon,

Just for info and to expand on what Ed already said, if you remove the filter, you have drained the oil from the filter and that is all, no oil from the pan drains out through the filter. Drain plug drains oil from the pan. So odds are if you added more volume of oil than what the filter holds, the engine is over filled with oil. Not sure over filled would cause abnormal noise, but sure a possibility.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Back when I ran pipes that blocked my drain plug completely (and I was much younger), I made a fitting/tube to go in the top where the oil pressure sending unit is.... I would screw it in and put the hose in the drain pan. Pop out the spark plugs and I used the kick starter to pump the oil out. Could get it all except for maybe the last 1/4 of a quart in the bottom of the pan.
Seemed easier than taking the headers off every 3000 miles......

If you took out a quart and added a quart, I don't see how you could have killed anything.
I agree you need to actually drain the thing from the pan plug and change the filter. If the oil blacks up again quickly, keep changing it. If there is a lot of sludge in the engine, the clean oil will be removing it for a while. Get some decent (cheap) oil at wally's like Rotella in the gallon jugs while you are doing the frequent changes to clean the motor.
