What packing for dunstall mufflers
24 May 2014 14:31
I just installed some dunstall replica mufflers on my kz750 twin. Rode it a few times as it rode and felt great. Untill the packing blew away. I'm not sure what kind of packing I should get, and where I can get it at. Thanks!

If you can figure out what size of packing, Supertrapp sells the fiberglass material:
www.supertrapp.com/product_sections/cat.asp?CatID=87
When I repack my baffles with the packing, I lay the material around the baffle(with it out of the muffler), and then secure it with 3-4 pieces of 0.032 Stainless Steel Safety Wire evenly spaced(someplaces call it "Lockwire"), Around the material, with the baffle inside it(like a cocoon).

Depends on how fancy you want to be and how much you want to spend.
MFolks just told you the fancy expensive way.
I got some yellow insulation from my local Ace Hardware and a spool of thin wire. I wrapped the insulation around the baffle, then tied it off using the thin wire. Low cost, quick. No one sees it, and it lasts for many thousands of miles without blowing out. IIRC, less than $10 and was done in an afternoon from start of decision making to going for a ride.
Dealer's choice.

Dude,if you are going to use fiberglass insulation,it has to be the pink stuff. If you REALLY want to do it right, take off the entire system, and get the blown-in stuff from Home Depot. You have to rent the installer, but it's pretty cheap. You just have to shoot it down one of the headder pipes untill it stars coming out the others, then you know you have enough in there. But seriously,I used to wrap the baffle with insulation, but it would burn off after a month, and then I would have to re-wrap it. I now use Moose Racing baffle wrap. Fairly inexpensive, and you can get it at most bike shops. It sounds good and hasn't burned out yet.

You could also wrap it with steel wool.

LOL. I used the yellow because it was cheap. If you already have white, why not try it? For me, the main thing seemed to be to wrap it tight and tie it snug with the wire. Best of luck.
BTW, I had a sound meter with me when I did the work. Dropped 10dB (half as quiet) over unpacked.

...Here-here!

...Steel wool works well and doesn't burn away like fiberglass.
