Ticking noise

Hey everyone
Last year my KZ550 would make a ticking noise while it was idling but over the winter I adjusted the float height and did a few other things and the noise stopped. Yesterday after I turned the bike on I noticed the noise was back. It seems to go away when the bike is going more than 35 mph. I can't figure out where the tick can be coming from. Any ideas?

A tick is usually a loose valve clearance. Some ticking noise is normal, if it's really loud it's probably a valve.

Could be oil is slow getting to top of engine. If the bike has a lot of miles the oil pump screen might be sitting in sludge.

Thanks for the replies. I narrowed it down to the cam closest to the front of the bike. It seems to be an intermittent problem. The bike only has 7000 original miles on it so I don't think anything is clogged up.

Cam Chain may be it also a very small leak in you exhaust clamp area creates sounds look for little tiny puffs of smoke up front by the clamps. may have a nut vibrating loose.

I tightened up all the exhaust bolts today and the noise is still there. I'm thinking it's the cam chain. Anyone know how to tighten it up so it stops slapping the valve cover?

Your engine has an automatic cam chain tensioner, so if the cam chain is out of spec, you might need to consider either replacing it with a manual cam chain tensioner or installing a new cam chain.
