Hello, zoli1961, and WELCOME to KZr! :cheer:

Am unfamiliar with "Zr 500" and uncertain as to exactly which 1981 Kawasaki model is being asked about.

Kawasaki's 1981 four cylinder models usually have 2 ignition coils, one of which should be connected to the outside spark plugs, and the other coil connected to the inside spark plugs.

Good Fortune! :)

From an internet search the Z500 is apparently a scaled down version of the Z1R. neato.
Here's a wiring diagram for the KZ500-B1. I have no idea if the B1 is the same as yours. home.comcast.net/~loudgpz -->>> the link's main page is here -->>> loudhvx - motorcycle stuff

Here's the way the stuff is on an 81 KZ650. Yours is probably the same, but your coils could be on the reverse sides of the frame from the 650 &/or the igniter wire colors may be reversed as well.

Firing order = 1-2-4-3.
Right side coil = #1 & #4 spark plug wires and Black & Red igniter wires.
Left side coil. = #2 & #3 spark plug wires and Green & Red igniter wires

Incredibly pedantic mode on:
Because of the "wasted spark" system we use, the firing order is 1/4 - 2/3 - 1/4 - 2/3 (1 and 4, then 2 and 3).
Ignition stroke order (set by the valves) is 1 - 2 - 4 - 3 .

I know it's an ridiculously particular point, but it took me a couple of weeks farting around with the timing to get it straight back when I installed the Dyna-S on the A1.

Thanks for your attention. :-)
