Tranny Problems

I bought my 79 KZ1000E last fall with 38,000 miles on it. In doing a couple of high speed runs recently the bike popped out of 5th gear into fourth gear and even 3rd once at about 7,000 rpms while hard oh the gas. I'm thinking I probably need to tear it down. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem? Also this bike (shaft) turns about 4,000 rpms at 60 mph hour indicated. Seems kinda high. Is this normal?
