Question on Cam Sprocket Marks

17 Apr 2014 10:08 - 17 Apr 2014 10:09
#629408
I did my cam timing. I lined up the marks to the top of the cylinder head and the intake cam sprocket mark is dead inline with the top of head while the front is just below the head line by thousands.

Its on the 28th pin.....tripled checked

Im chalking it up to some stretch in the cam chain. It turns freely without interference or hitting anything.

Am I ok.

Thanks, Spence

Sounds ok , those marks hardly ever line up perfectly with the head.
Lot of factors throw them out a little, Camchain stretch, head and base gasket thickness, deck height , top idler height etc etc.
Only way to get the cam timing absolutely perfect is to degree them in with slotted cam sprockets.

Thanks Zed.

If you were one tooth off, would you bang a valve?

I have a 1105 domed piston.

How touchy is the timing of the cams?

how many teeth if not one to you hit a valve?

All depended on what lift cams , pistons and valve sizes you run.
Have had plenty of motors in with a tooth out and they just run bad but things get close.
Any more and you are talking valve to valve or piston contact.
