KZ650 won't shift into third

New guy on the forum here and I need some help.

I have a 1979 KZ650B. I have only had the bike for about a year and a half and love the bike. So towards the end of riding time last year my clutch cable snapped right at the shifter handle. I stored the bike and it been sitting till yesterday when I finally got time to get the new clutch cable in. I haven't really done the adjustment as said in the service manual, but I did adjust to what the old cable was set at for the time being (laid them side by side and set the adjustment nut to the same length). So the issue I am having is that when riding it'll shift in first and second just fine but won't shift into third. I'm pretty sure the shift pedal is supposed to be spring loaded but I can't remember if was spring loaded last year. I shift up from first to second just fine, then when I go to shift again the pedal doesn't move up. Like it is at its max travel. I'm thinking I lost or a spring got broken at sometime that is preventing the pedal from returning to home position so I can shift to the higher gear.

Any ideas or help?

I'm not familiar with the 650 but would think it is similar to the 750/4
I would strongly suggest you start by following the procedure in the manual rather than comparing measurements to the old cable. It that works then great and if not then you have a good base from which to investigate further.

In Rob's pic just above his red box the two round pin
looking thing's in the cut out are the return spring for the shifter.
If the lower one break's in would loose return on the up shift
if not all spring return.

Thanks guys. I'm pretty sure it is that spring. I'm gonna have to get it into my mechanic to get torn apart just to make sure.
