use a die or a nut and run it way up. then cut the bolt then back it off. slowly working it back and forth over the cut edge. I would recommend using a die but I ve had to use a nut plenty of times. Just make sure its on the bolt before you cut. When your done you should be able to thread a nut or thread it a whole BY HAND.

Thread a nut onto the bolt before you cut it. Cut it, gently remove any burrs with a fine file, then slowly turn the nut off the bolt. When the cut end of the bolt is halfway through the nut, twist the nut back and forth several times to straighten the threads. Give it a test run first and you'll soon get to where it works very well. Ed

Ah, sounds like a plan....

One bolt did bottom out about 2mm before it snugged up, I'll try this method on one.
