kz750 twin cylinder head question

I have a question. I just got my KZ750 running, and today I took it for about a 10-15 mile ride just to make sure everything felt good. I then took it to my buddies to get some new pipes put on it. we pulled the header pipes and upon doing that, noticed that there was a lot of oil by the spark plug and basically all over the top of the cylinder head. Nothing below, so I don't think it's the head gasket. However, upon inspection, We noticed a large hole on both left and right sides of the cylinder head behind the fins, Below both of the big holes were 2 small almost half moon shaped holes. on each side. So my question is are these normal?
