Alt. and ignition cover removal?

24 Mar 2014 13:35
#626391
This weekend I tried removing my left and right (alt. and gin. covers) engine covers, and caught hell removing them. I got my dyna inanition stuff off, and unbolted the hex bolts. tugged on it a little bit and nothing. I'll snap some pics and post but what am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

Are you saying that the right side came off, but not the left (from the seated position)? There are magnets on the left side that spin around with the motor, and you have to overcome the pull of the magnets, provided you have all the bolts out, of course.

So, once I take all the bolts out I can pull on it and not brake anything, even if its still connected to the alt.?

Sure. The "rotor" (so called because it rotates) is a collection of magnets that is bolted to the end of the crank shaft. The "stator" (so called because it's stationary) has the windings on it. They (the windings) will have 3 wires coming from them that will need to be unplugged at some point, but, that's all there is to it!

Keep in mind, I don't have a manual in front of me, and I'm NOT a Kawasaki technician. These are general comments based on my experience with other bikes and 20+ years as an electrician working in power plants.

We have at work 3 "stators" and "rotors" combined making almost 100MW

Never Heard of "Chrome Powder coat" make sure and post pix of that! Just an FYI...You may already be aware, but those covers will polish up like chrome...takes some time and a lot of elbow grease, but once done, real easy to maintain...

I know. Everyone does the polished stuff. I wanted to do it a little different. I'm building my bike for "looks". I won't folks to see it, point, and ask, what's that, while keeping it looking date specific, and have that OME +, mixed with, cafe, mixed with "mad-max" look (tastefully)?

Chrome powder coat, has a dull, chrome, shinny, look to it! LOL. Metallic look, all the way!

It may be the product I'm using but my chrome powder coat turns to gun metal grey as soon as any oil gets onto the surface. Not a really big deal but the end result is anything but shiny.

LOL, I hope it doesn't go gunmetal on me… If it does, I don't think it would ruin the look, but it's not the color I'm looking for. Let's hope it stays the color it starts out! Thanks for the info though. I may try a corner piece soon.
