Bike will not fire
18 Mar 2014 18:25
Hey guys I'm new to the site and figured this was the best place to get information. I have a late 1973 z1a that will not start. Bike ran well before I had to replace a broken head stud that broke off in the lower case. I rebuilt the motor and now the bike simply won't start. I've done everything to spec as far as the cams and the cam chain and rebuilt the carbs to insure fuel is there. I have good spark on all 4 plugs but am unsure if my timing is correct on the ignition or if I have a compression issue due to a shim problem. The starter seems to be running somewhat fast and even with spraying fuel into the carbs there is no combustion other then the occasional pop. Any an all help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah that was going to be my next action. Do you know off hand what I should be getting on each cylinder?

There was practically zero compression. It bearly moved the gauge. I bought two different gauges thinking the first was reading wrong. It read approximately 15 psi on all cylinders. I'll take pictures tonight and hopefully a keen eye can spot what's wrong

DID you have the throttle fully open when you ran the tests?

Yes I tried it with all sparkplugs in and with them all out like I should. Tried it with the choke fully on and with it off and with the throttle full open and closed with bearly any movement on two different gauges.i turned the motor over for 8 rotations on each try.

Yeah after checking the shim clearance they are way off over all valves. I'm going to get them within .002-.004 tolerance and try again
