Hey KZR, long time listener, first time caller. I love this forum and all the intimate knowledge you guys have of these great bikes. I'm probably one of the younger guys (22) who fell in love with these bikes, so I hope you bear with me as I patch up some holes in my KZ know how. I need info on oil lines for a turbo on the 550 platform.

Right now I'm over half way done with my fifth KZ/GPZ rebuild. I've done two KZ750s, a later model GPZ550 (ZX) for my sister, and restored my 82 GPz 750 that's just waiting on paint restoration. I'm not chopping these up into cafes or bobbers either. I gotta say the classic muscle silhouette is timeless and a Kawi 4 running wide open still blows people away. This latest one has kind of got out of hand though. First the frame turned green and now a turbo showed up somehow.

I've split cases, swapped trans, plastigauged cranks ect, on these bikes along with lots of exposure to modern sport bikes. I like to pretend I'm not a complete hack. I've got the engine squared away for the most part but what I need to know is where is the ideal place to take off high pressure oil from the block for the turbo? Will the oil pressure switch port work? Is there an ideal return location for the draining oil? Has anyone else done a turbo on this mill here? In line oil feed restrictions ? Any input is appreciated,I know a lot of people may question the choice of bike for this endeavor, so I attached the magazine cover I found that probably started my crazy spiral into outrageous. Maybe this should be in the project section, but I really don't have time to document the build from start to finish. Maybe I could post a review topic if all goes as planned.

ATP did the original kit for the KZ550 using an ishi  turbo  not a big selection of small turbo's back then..........a buddy drag raced one of these...... :side: the ishi was way smaller than the rayjay.... :S oil supply was from the pressure switch......oil return was by a large line to the oil (downhill slope from the turbo) fill if memory serves me..... since it's a babbit bearing motor , no oil restrictor was needed.......

is it gonna be a draw thru or blow thru ? I'm assuming you are building like an ATP draw thru........

Thanks Turboking!

I'm thinking ATP style draw through with the turbo above the cases. No need for fuel pressure regulator and carb boost reference. Simple, cheap, but rather crude. The other option for turbo location was down behind the front wheel like the factory 750 turbo with early zx600 CVs off a blowthrough.

Advantages? I cant imagine creating much of a difference turbo lag wise. Is blowthrough worth the effort? Throttle response through the draw through might be poorer right? For a draw carb I have a 38mm Mikuni CV off a DRZ 450 big bore bike my buddy gave me. Its got big jets and needles with it along with accelerator pump. I'm not married to anything yet though. Should I just get a mechanical flattie carb for a drawthrough? How do CVs respond to draw through?

yes, more turbo lag with draw thru........ only cv I ever saw used on a draw thru was an old S U....... not good throttle response with the turbo in boost (signal strength), off boost it was okay, if I remember correct..... american turbo pak used a necked down zenith/bendix (Harley Davidson) carb on the kz 550.

 ATP still used a buzz box fuel pump and regulator using 1 or 2 psi fuel pressure......same as the larger kits.
