Starter Clutch. Again was created by freakinbike
My starter clutch has been acting up making horrible noises and I finally got it out today. The starter clutch shows absolutely no signs of damage. The rollers and springs were all in place and none of them are broken. I've inspected every piece that came out along with the clutch (secondary shaft, primary chain, etc). Everything rolls nicely and looks great.

Did I really just do all that for nothing?

Maybe some or all of the rollers are a bit worn? I'd put a new kit in it just to justify going that far :P

Be sure to check the starter clutch gear for wear. Below is a picture of a new and old one for comparison. Ed

Not that this is the case, but maybe...
I had the same issue after putting in a brand new roller kit with pins and springs. Turned out that the roller tracks in the housing were worn to the point where the tolerances were beyond fixing. When I replaced the whole starter clutch with a brand new one, the problem was...gone!

Oh holy cow, my starter clutch gear looks just like the old one, if not worse. Maybe I should look into a new one of those? And a new starter clutch just for good measure? I already have the kit of pins and springs.

If yours has those ridges I would replace it while you have everything apart. According to Kawasaki.com is is still an "Active" part, so any dealer can order it. Partzilla.com lists it at $47.82. Ed

It appears to look fine but more than likely you need a new starter kit.I had the same issue. For 65 bucks problem solved.

Mine does this. After it has sat for a while the starter clutch starts to act up. Once I get it started the starter clutch goes back to being just a minor annoyance. I think it has to do with lubrication since I almost never have a problem when the bike is being ridden regularly.
Have you tried turning the engine over by hand first?
