Scored a MkII motor, what to do with it!
03 Mar 2014 14:56
In the local trader today a guy had a MK 1000 motor for sale. I have not seen it but it is low miles and run sometime back. It has sat in a storage shed. Comes with carbs, wiring harness forks, wheels and whatever else he can find.. He is going to drop it off this weekend. I have no late model stuff. Soooooooo, what do I do with it? Go kart? I couldnt pass it up.

Those things dyno'd at like 77hp - with lots of torque and I think you'd be begging for death on a Go-Cart

My wife asked me if I still loved her - I said "Honey, I love you more than new carburetor boots ! "

Coffee table? Nay, cement mixer maybe  So is it worth $200 if it is not locked up and looks sound?

The MK2 is a kicker motor so most parts are interchangeable with the early Z9 etc.

Wayne,
One thing I'd like to know.... does it fit into a KZ900 or pre 1980 KZ1000 frame...
Pre '80 engines are getting scare here in AZ/West, local bike yard has MKII bikes/engines but my understanding is the frames would have to be modified...
If you have a spare frame to test/take images of... Would LUV to know to what extent mods would be required...
Just a thought,
OMR

The MK2 engine is a 1015CC kickstart equipped motor and drops straight in all earlier frames.
The later non kickstart motors are NOT MK2's but 998cc 'J ' or or 1100cc GPZ engines.
Fitting the later 'J' style requires frame mount mods.

Um, let's see? ebay! MK II cases over $100, MK II big pin crank over $100, 28mm pumpers over $100, Head $100, jugs pistons if there good, over $100, beefier tranny $50-75, stator&rotor over $50. Then you have a front end and wheels? And other stuff?
Even after greed bay takes their 30%. You can still double, triple your money. That of course if this a KZTOOA"E" engine # 79 or 80.
I hate ebay, but I still do it. The flow bench that no one wanted for $1000, sold on ebay for $1250.
Ebay & PYPL fees, $180. I am $70 more than the private sale.
But a Mark II engine, Just build it for your bike, Go bigger & faster.

Turns out the guy is traveling my way and will drop it and the extras off. I do have a 76 with a motor that needs rebuilding so I can drop it in there. Excited to see what it looks like and what he has to throw in. Front end parts interchangeable?

That's what Kawasaki advertised, but I've still got the magazines, and the MKII dyno'd at 77hp, and when the improved KZ1000J motor appeared it dyno'd at 79.01 hp. The MKII was power-competitive with everything except the CBX which made 82.83hp and the original GS1100 that did 86.67 hp.
I put 51,000 miles on my MKII, it was a good bike.
