Oil level? Dont laugh lol

28 Feb 2014 12:41

Ok so i changed the oil in my 1980 KZ1000 shaft and i figured the 3.7 liters marked on the engine to around 3.9 quarts. I put a gallon of rotella in which is 4 quarts and Im still not seeing oil in the sight glass.
I also changed the filter so do i need to add more with the filter change or is something else wrong?
Thanks for any help.

If its on the side stand it may not show the actual level. Stand it up and/or put it on the center stand and see where it is.

A gallon is more than enough.

Perhaps looking right though the clear clean oil behind the completely covered sight glass and thinking that seeing air but actually seeing clear oil.

Can use a turkey baster or rubber ball syringe with a hose attached to suck out some of the oil from the crankcase.

Once the level gets low enough, should be able to see the difference between oil and air behind the sight glass.

Good Fortune! :)

 you should check the oil with the bike vertical and both wheels on the ground as most center stands have the rear of the bike high (higher in the rear) which will give you a false oil level reading............ you ride with both wheels on the ground  ........Sooooooo , always check oil levels this way.... :S my .02

The owner's manual probably says to check the oil with the bike level & on the center stand.

To the op: after filling w oil, did you warm up the bike or did you just dump in the oil & check it?

I have it on the center stand. The bike isn't running now Im waiting on parts right now. The manual does say to fill it up just above the glass then run the bike for a minute and check it again irc.
It does say to do all this on the center stand.

You can not properly adjust the oil level on a non running bike. That said, if you put in 4 quarts you overfilled it.
